Chittenden Reissues Thousands of Debit Cards

The security breach at Hannaford supermarkets a few months ago continues to have a ripple effect here.

The Chittenden Bank is now reissuing about 15,000 MasterCard ATM and Debit Cards after recent reports showed fraudulent activity on some cards. Many banks immediately sent out new cards to customers when Hannaford announced that security had been breached. But the Chittenden decided to wait. Officials say the chance for fraud was small, while the inconvenience of issuing new cards would be great.

"Our first thought was for our customers and we didn't want to inconvenience them by reissuing a card because if they've given that card number or card information to a vendor then they have to go back out to the vendors and give all that information so we were really thinking of our customers in this process," said Kathy Schirling of the Chittenden Bank.

People can still use their current cards for debit purchases, but not credit. The bank hopes to have all new cards out within a week. Customers should make sure to activate them by July 15.
